Salmon Shark: Prince of Wales’ Apex Predator

Salmon Shark: Prince of Wales’ Apex Predator
Salmon sharks are one of the ocean’s most powerful predators in Southeast Alaska. These sharks resemble and are related to Great Whites, reaching lengths of up to ten feet and weighing over 800 pounds. They are fast, aggressive hunters that target salmon, squid, and smaller fish. Salmon sharks are known for their ability to regulate their body temperature, giving them an edge in cold northern waters.

Salmon Shark Sightings Around Boardwalk Lodge

Guests visiting Boardwalk Lodge on Prince of Wales Island often hear thrilling stories about salmon sharks. These predators are frequently seen in the same waters where anglers focus on King and Coho salmon. Although salmon sharks are not a primary target for sport fishing, sightings create unforgettable memories for Boardwalk guests.

Salmon sharks are typically found offshore but sometimes venture closer to shore following schools of migrating salmon. They are most active during summer, especially July through early September. Seeing one breach the surface in pursuit of prey is a breathtaking experience.

Edibility and Fishing Challenges

While not commonly pursued at Boardwalk Lodge, salmon sharks are considered excellent table fare. Their firm, mild meat is similar to swordfish. Salmon shark steaks are perfect for grilling when properly handled and cleaned, offering rich flavor without being overly oily.
Catching a salmon shark requires wire leaders as their teeth and sandpaper-like skin will easily destroy monofilament. Boardwalk Lodge does not typically target these fish. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game tightly regulates the harvest of salmon sharks to protect populations. If caught unintentionally, anglers are encouraged to release the shark carefully and quickly, which, as you might understand, can be difficult and dangerous. The current limit is one shark a day, with a possession limit of two.

Wild Encounters in Southeast Alaska

When visiting Boardwalk Lodge, guests experience some of Alaska's most fascinating waters. Encounters with salmon sharks, whether seen finning on the surface or chasing salmon schools, are a vivid reminder that these are true wilderness waters filled with powerful fish and huge marine mammals. If you do spot one, consider yourself lucky to have had a salmon shark encounter, a truly unforgettable experience.
