Alaska Freshwater Fishing Guides

Fly Fishing and Spin Casting

Jay Mar
Head Freshwater Guide
Jay is the head freshwater fishing guide at Boardwalk Lodge. He has an interesting and varied background. He grew up in the restaurant business in Wichita, Kansas, where his father owned a restaurant for 40 years. Jay graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in cultural anthropology. Later, he attended the Scottsdale Culinary Institute and graduated from the Le Cordon Bleu culinary program there. Part of the curriculum was an externship program, which he fulfilled at Boardwalk. Not only did he serve well in our kitchen, but the following year became our Executive Chef.

Fishing, however, is an even greater love for Jay. He has fished throughout the U.S. and has been a well-accepted guide in Kansas. Beginning with the 2004 season, he began guiding for Boardwalk, where he enjoys guiding guests for Alaska's numerous freshwater species.

Saltwater Fishing

Rich Butts
USCG Certified Saltwater Fishing Captain
A resident of Southwest Washington, Rich pursued an undergraduate degree in education from Central Washington University and later earned a master's in Sports Science. He has been teaching for many years and has earned numerous awards for coaching at both middle and high school levels.

Rich became addicted to fishing at age seven. He spends countless hours on the water -- particularly the Columbia River near his home -- where some of his favorite targets are salmon and steelhead. Rich looks forward to coaching lodge guests this summer, helping them reel in some good times and perhaps the catch of a lifetime!
